Gaming History
Way back in the second half of 2007 UT3 was on the horizon and looked to be a promising game. Both myself and Jiminicricket were no longer really in a clan as Jim had left Grumpy Old Dogs a while back and I felt it was really coming to the end of its life. He then contacted me to make me an offer, he told me he was making a new clan and wanted me to help him out with it alongside Sephirdorf. After a bit of searching for a clan name, Jim happened upon Violent By Design which I believe is an album by Jedi Mind Tricks (some hiphop group I don’t claim to know anything about lol).
Anyway our first game was Unreal Tournament 3 on which we had some success with Jim getting in the top 10 in the world at one point. Unfortunately the ladder was really inactive despite the obvious qualities to the game, we still claimed 2nd on the leaderboard and I believe Jim made the semi finals of the singles tournament.
At this point we had a small but talented roster, not many decided to go onto our next game though which was Rainbow Six: Vegas 2. Jim pretty much had to build the clan again with a whole new set of members (with my help of course). We weren’t that strong on this game, reaching 10th on the ladder, but it was a lot of fun and we brought in some of our most entertaining members, most notably Uk_Method. He was ‘interesting’ at the game but so entertaining that we kept him around and it wasn’t long before he was invited to join the clan roster on ConsoleGaming.eu.
After a dabble with GTAIV, the next big game on the horizon was definitely Metal Gear Solid 4, with the clan specifically interested in the online component Metal Gear Online. After a promising period on the beta it was decided to give this game a proper go, and a proper go it got. I didn’t personally like the game so did not get involved, but Jim and Seph both established themselves as a couple of the top players on the game. Under Jim’s stewardship, some excellent tactics and masterful recruitment, Violent By Design finally announced ourselves by achieving 1st on the ladder. To put this in perspective, two of the clans who finished below us entered the Konami official tournament and qualified for the finals in Japan. With regards to recruitment, the one that stands out most is Sniper_wolf0185 who remains with us today, she played both MGO and CoD4 and immediately endeared herself to me and Jim. Its also worth mentioning that during this time the clan had a squad on CoD4 for fun, we didn’t take it too seriously though and it ended up being both a frustration and a laugh.
After our success on MGO, there was very little in the way of decent clan supported games for a good while. Luckily the squad that had been put together by now had become close resulting in a lot of fun with social games such as Burnout Paradise and LittleBigPlanet. This I feel showed one of our best characteristics as a clan, we are all good friends and don’t need to have regular wars to keep together. At this point I also took the reins of clan leadership from Jim as he felt he was no longer able to fulfil what is required of a clan leader. But after a while people were itching to play competitively again, with two big games in CoD:WaW and Resistance 2.
The proximity of the release of the two aforementioned games led to a choice being made as to what we go onto competitively. Seeing as the majority of the clan did not enjoy CoD4 competitively it was decided that we go onto Resistance 2 competitively, with some members playing for other clans on CoD:WaW if they so wished. So Resistance 2 is currently what the clan are competing on, hopefully we can get in as many matches as we can before Killzone 2 is released. Once 27th February rolls around though, everyone will be on Killzone 2 and that is where VBD will be too, hoping to build on past successes and prove what we can do.
Other Points of Note
I would also like to point out the contributions made by certain members of the clan as I feel they deserve it, plus I’m the leader so can do whatever the hell I like.
Firstly I’d like to talk about my co-leaders, the youthful uk_method and the sexy sniper_wolf0185. These two have kept me sane over the past few months and I feel completely happy leaving them to sort things out if I’m predisposed or can’t be arsed. As mentioned above, uk_method joined the team on Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 after easily fooling us that he was a lot older than his real age of 14, and Sniperwolf joined after Jim spotted that she needed a clan and offered to ‘trial’ her. If anyone has an issue that they don’t feel they want to talk to me about then don’t hesitate to go to these two.
Next up is our talented webmaster Viper, who created our old site and now this brand spanking new one. He designed this site from scratch (and a little help with coding from Tront of First Frag) so mad props to him for doing that, feels good to say we have our own custom-built site. If you have a technical issue about the site then he’s the man to go and pester about it.
Finally I want to thank Redh3lix for supporting us ever since Slayer introduced me to him. He kindly set aside a section of the FirstFrag forums for VBD and has generally been able to provide good advice on running the clan and also helped Vipe out with various bits and bobs with regards to the websites. Vipe also wanted Tront from FirstFrag to be formally thanked for the help that he's given. |
